Literature Branch
In literature, The Maya Tree branches out into Poetry and Prose. The stories and poems in this first issue reflect the promise of what is to become our very own literature. In the near future, this vital textual element of our artistic landscape shall branch out further: into extended aesthetic projects delivered in serialization, perhaps also experimental pieces bending and breaking from constraining conventions and genres; and also, into the Critical Discourse sub-branch of literary theory and criticism. We hold that creative-writing and critical-reading of literature constitute one of the many evolving and hidden strengths of our liberal arts university. Given the online and print publication platform The Maya Tree represents, and our continuing creative and critical study of the art and craft, we feel we are inching closer to foregrounding our own school of literature, criticism and immersed critical thought. All this remains to be seen, of course: but time, now, to direct you to the writing itself; we wish you many pleasant readings, and many happy returns!
***
The Maya Tree Council, particularly the Literature Branch, would like to thank not only the writers whose work features in this Issue, but all students and alumni who responded to the call for submissions and contributed a beautiful pool of poetry and prose for consideration. We put your work through a rigorous blind-peer-review process to determine final entries, and shall endeavor to make this process even more robust for future issues. We hope you will all build on the landmark and foundation your efforts and this first Issue represent for all of us.
